Thief River is a western chuck wagon of raw energy with a punk rock heart, country soul and a ten gallon rock n roll attitude.

“We’re just 5 cock blocking punk rocking middle age juvenile delinquents who used to be nobody, still claiming our lack of fame! ”

New interview with Thief River up!

Thief River – small town penchants…

July 9, 2012

On the scene for about a year and half now, Thief River is a country/punk/rock ensemble composed of: Mike Mitchell (vocals and acoustic guitar), Mike MaKKay (guitar, mandolin and vocals), Chris Dockter (guitar and vocals), Geoff Orwiler (bass and vocals), and Craig Dubin (drums). I recently asked Mike Mitchell a few questions about this new-ish group…

Q: What bands did you all come from?

Mike: I played in a band called Rexway for about 6 or 7 years with Dubin and Dockter until around 2005. Mike MaKKay currently plays in the band King Rat when he’s not rocking with us, and Geoff Orwiler also plays in the band Cure for Pain.

Q: The dreaded, obligatory question: where does the name come from? Any specific theme here?

Mike: We got the name Thief River from a town in Minnesota with the same name. It’s a small town where people don’t have much to do other than drink, fight and fuck. All things we enjoy and like to write about. Seemed fitting.

Here's a little web buzz about the upcoming show at the Dove from examiner.com

"Denver's own Thief River makes their anticipated debut at The Soiled Dove Underground this Saturday, August 20. And if you missed out on their sneak performance this Saturday, you'll want to make sure you don't miss the debut show!

Thief River features members of other Colorado reigning bands Rexway, King Rat and Cure for Pain (www.facebook.com/thiefriver). Rexway's break up in 2005, the Denver music scene experienced a huge loss in the area of its country punk genre especially considering there aren't any other bands that brand their music with the genre's title. Thief River's country punk sound combines country and rock and roll that exudes the band's raw attitude..."  By Courtney Becker - Denver Music Scene Examiner

Another new-band alert: Meet Thief River, a group made up of former members of Rexway
By Dave Herrera

Tue., Jul. 12 2011 at 11:00 AM

So evidently, we should have held off a bit longer posting that scene report yesterday. After that item went live, we received word that Primasonic had reached the end of the road, and this morning, we caught wind of another new group getting ready to hit the scene. Thief River is being led by Mike Mitchell and features some of his former Rexway co-horts -- Chris Dockter on guitar and Craig Dubin on drums -- along with King Rat guitarist Mike Makkay and bassist Geoff Orwiler.

The outfit, slated to make its live on August 20 at the Soiled Dove Underground, just posted a clip for the first single from its self-titled, forthcoming three-song EP, which the quartet recorded at Strickler Studio with Jimmy Strickler. Check out the video (shot in the band's rehearsal space), and then download the tracks below. "
